How often should I service my Garage Door?General wear and tear cause that some aspects need replacement from time to time. If this is not attended to timeously this can cause unnecessary accidents. Should one part needs attention or replacement and is not attended to it places extra strain on something else which can then result in more damage and higher repair costs. Weather changes also impact the general operation of a Garage Door. Lubrication, as well as the springs, are mainly influenced by these weather changes. We suggest to have your garage door serviced at least every 6 months

Why can't I just repair my Garage Door myself?Safety: Someone could get hurt. Garage doors are very heavy, and the springs are under a lot of tension. If you make a mistake in your repair, a spring could fly off and hit someone, or the door could fall. The accident could occur while you are working, or when someone else is in the way. Garage repair technicians are trained to do the job safely and correctly. Effectiveness: When you attempt to repair your broken garage door yourself, you could make the problem worse. This happen often. We often receive a call from a client asking us to fix their garage door, after they tried and failed. These jobs are usually bigger and more expensive than they would have been if the client had called us in the first place. Without proper training and the right tools, you’ll end up costing yourself more money. You’ll probably feel pretty lousy, too. Failure isn’t fun. Trust Us: Maybe you think we’re just angling for more money by advising you to call in the professionals—after all, we’re the professionals. But honestly, we’d make more money off of you if you tried the repair and totally bungled it. Then we could come in and fix your mistakes and charge you more. But that’s not how we do things. We like taking care of our clients. We don’t want to see you hurt, and we don’t want to see you waste money. So let us help you. Call us. Your wallet and your body (and your pride) will be glad you did.

As the garage door moves on metal tracks which are mounted to the garage walls, one needs to always ensure that the hinges are still securely fastened. The springs are the most important and most dangerous component and it’s always best to have a qualified technician to repair or replace them for you.

How can I prevent Garage Door Accidents?Test the safety features on your Garage Door Garage doors have their own, automatic safety features. Your job is to make sure these features are in working order. The safety sensors shine an invisible beam across the opening about six inches from the ground. If anything—your pet tortoise, perhaps—interrupts that beam while the door is closing, the sensor signals the door to go back up again. Test the sensor by interrupting the bean with a broom. Auto-reverse also makes the door go back up again but is triggered by the door hitting something it shouldn’t. Test the auto-reverse by letting the door close on a roll of paper towels. If either test fails to make the door reverse (without crushing the towels) call in a professional. Inspect the door and its mechanism monthly Look at the entire mechanism—springs, cables, rollers and pulleys—for signs of damage or wear, or for any problems in function. If any of these structures were to fail, the door could fall on someone. If you do find a problem, call a professional. Don’t play with the door Little kids are light enough to ride the garage door as it rises by hanging on to the door handle—it’s a lot of fun until something goes wrong and a kid gets hurt or killed. Other kids (and not a few adults) like to trigger the door to close and then run out under it—it’s a fun challenge unless someone loses the race the same day the auto-reverse fails. Basically, don’t play with garage doors and teach your kids not to play with them, either. Hide the remote from small children and mount the wall control out of their reach. And if you absolutely must know if you could race the door and win, have a friend time you with a stop-watch while the door stays put. Don’t get your fingers pinched A lot of fingers get pinched every year between garage door sections. Keep your fingers away from these joints and teach children to do the same. If you are buying a new door, consider a model that has pinch protection. Open OR closed for garage door safety Leave the door fully open or completely closed, not partially open. It’s hard to predict which way a half-open door will move when it is reactivated and could close on something (if the safety features also choose that moment to not work well). Fix broken windows Broken windows present a security concern, a loss of energy efficiency for your home, and a direct safety hazard, as someone could get cut by the glass. Even a window that is merely cracked should be fixed at once since a cracked window could shatter at any time.

How can I prevent a House Break in through my Garage Door?Keep Track of Your Garage Door Opener Your portable garage door opener makes getting into your house as easy as one click—which is a problem, if the opener falls into the wrong hands. So make sure this helpful device stays in your hands. Don’t lose your opener. Check the Door to Your Garage Your attached garage has two doors, remember, the one the car drives through and the other one that leads to your house. Many families rely on the garage door for security and treat the other door to the garage as an interior door, leaving it unlocked. That’s fine, until somebody forgets to close the garage door. Before bed, or before going out, double-check that the garage door is really closed, or that the other door between house and garage is locked—or both. Secure the Emergency Release Cord Many garage doors can be opened by using a coat hanger to activate the emergency release cord (thieves know how to do this). Defeat thieves by adding a zip-tie or a lock to the hole where the release cord goes, especially before going away for an extended period, like on vacation. Taking care of your garage door is one of the most important factors when keeping your home safe. Be sure to keep up with maintenance on your garage door and use proper safety measures to protect your home from unwanted visitors. Here at Garage Door and More, we want to help keep your family safe and sound.
